Where are you currently based in the world?
I am currently based in Sydney.
What led you into the world of fashion and design?
When I first came to Australia, I was illustrating and working for a small publishing company. I got a job at Vogue doing layouts that grew into art direction and contributing illustrator…and that just led into the next things naturally really. I’d always imagined I would do a degree of some sort, but it just never happened because I just moved into jobs that kept me moving forward into interesting worlds.
You have been at the helm of your eponymous brand for 25 years, which is such an incredible achievement! What are some of the most important lessons you have learnt along the way?
Follow your instincts and surround yourself with good people. I’ve been very fortunate to work with people I have had great respect for and enduring relationships, and it has helped to ground everything I do. Sometimes it is easy to get carried away with things, but you need those around you, that you trust, to help you stick to your lane.
Your label has a focus on beautiful textiles, with sustainability being an important part of the LM essence. What do you see for the future of the fashion industry from a sustainability lens?
Honestly, consciously making anything with longevity in mind is they only way I can see the future. Probably making less, or being more creative about how you do things would make sense. It’s a multi pronged approach and everyone will have their own view, but I’ve sort of always just done it. Been more thoughtful about it is probably a good thing though.
“Follow your instincts and surround yourself with good people.”
Where do you look for inspiration?
I am so curious about so many things…life is a little like a rabbit hole where one thing leads to another. Art and the artists themselves are always a very potent starting place for my thinking process and there is just an endless source of amazing creative work to draw on, be it the use of colour or just the life and times of someone. I do love to rummage in old stores to find old textiles also…and there have been many prints in the past that have evolved from those treasures.
When you are feeling uninspired, how do you pull yourself out of a creative rut?
Change!!! Turn a page, seek out the company of people who interest you and ask questions.. stop and read a page in a book randomly and find the answer to a question you didn’t know you were asking…just keep looking.. at everything.
Do you have any mentors or people you look to for advice?
Mentors..yes. Everyone! I ask a lot of questions and am probably annoying…my friends are my mentors..they give me good guidance and pick me up when I am a bit lost on things!!
Do you have any personal daily rituals that you follow?
Every morning I walk my dog Ted..sometimes reluctantly! And I’m not sure I can admit to many other daily rituals!
Have you had any epiphanies lately? (big or small?!)
Yes…just do it. I’ve never really been good at just letting things unfold and taking their course and I have found that it has become such a great way to live. I question much less and follow my instincts so much more..which can feel a little unnerving but also freeing.
What book have you read that left a lasting impression and why?
I loved ‘My Brilliant Career’ by Miles Franklin, it drew me to Australia and changed my life. Although not the best book I’ve ever read it’s effects were profound.
What is meal that you love to share with family and friends?
I love to cook so much! But there is a pretty standard at home meal we have which is homemade pasta and lamb ragu.
Do you use any tools or techniques to calm your body and mind?
I’m a lapsed meditator…but I still use it to slow down. It really is the only thing that slows your heart rate and clears your mind, although a good long walk is also great.
What is your favourite way to relax?
I’m a homebody and love to have a glass of wine and binge watch anything worth watching! Very unexciting…otherwise, driving to my friends place in the country which is about 3 or so hours away listening to music loudly always seems to make me happy too!
Do you have any favourite quotes or words of wisdom?
Make good things…its a mantra.
