Embracing Individuality: A Moment with Designer Stella Simona

In the bustling heart of Los Angeles, designer and content creator Stella Simona carves out moments of tranquility and creativity, blending the city's vibrant energy with her own serene rituals. As a creator and entrepreneur, Stella has cultivated a lifestyle that seamlessly integrates mindfulness and storytelling, leading to designs that are as beautiful as they are wearable.

Living in the vibrant city of Los Angeles, how do you typically start your day? Are there any morning rituals or habits that set a positive tone for you?

For me, waking up without interacting with any device and then basking in the sunlight while dry brushing in my bathroom is how I awaken my mind and body. Afterward, I drink hot lemon water while serving my kids breakfast. Once they’ve eaten, we go for a walk together in our neighborhood, taking in the fresh air, sounds, and sunlight. On the days we follow this routine without focusing on the time, we all feel so much better.

In the midst of a busy schedule, how do you create moments of mindfulness or self-care to nurture your own well-being and recharge creatively?

In the midst of a busy schedule, I create moments of mindfulness by weaving intentional pauses into my day. These breaks, taken at regular intervals, allow me to breathe and reset. As evening falls, I indulge in a soothing beauty ritual. Some nights, I draw a long bath, surrounded by the gentle glow of candles, while other times, I treat myself to an at-home facial. These rituals are my sanctuary, a dedicated time to decompress and rejuvenate. They are essential for maintaining focus and staying true to my purpose, reminding me that self-care is the foundation of creativity and well-being.

How do you cultivate creativity and find inspiration for as a designer?

One crucial aspect is allowing myself the time to simply be and reflect. Although I lead a busy life, I actively work to do fewer things for longer stretches, creating space for free-flowing thought. Inspiration often comes from this process of slowing down and being present. I find myself deeply attuned to the emotions evoked by different objects and experiences. I might draw inspiration from a shape I encountered while traveling or consider the practicality of a piece during moments of contemplation about the daily routines of the individual I envision wearing it. For example, I ponder what they do for work, whether the weight of the jewelry will be comfortable, and how movement might enhance its appeal.

By immersing myself in these reflections, I create designs that are not only beautiful but also thoughtfully crafted to resonate with the wearer's life and experiences. Every entrepreneur encounters pivotal moments in their journey.

Can you share a specific instance or decision that significantly shaped the trajectory of your brands?

Every entrepreneur encounters pivotal moments in their journey. One specific instance that significantly shaped the trajectory of my brand was when I decided to break away from traditional industry norms. I chose to become an entrepreneur to lead my life with freedom and to shape it according to each chapter of my journey.

In the beginning, I tried to conform by creating seasonal collections, as I was told this was the only way to get into retailers. Over 10 years ago, this was indeed more prevalent. However, I soon realized that this model didn’t resonate with me. Jewelry in my culture is timeless and created from the heart, not pushed out based on structured timelines. About five years into my brand's existence, I shifted to designing and releasing pieces on my own terms. Around nine to ten years into my brand's journey, after the birth of my second child, I embraced a new chapter. I decided to avoid making the business so structured that it stifled its artistic essence. To me, art is individualistic and custom to each person; it abides by few boundaries and is sold on its own terms. In recent years, I have focused on taking a few custom clients each month, creating unique pieces tailored to their tastes. When another client requests a previous design, I create a variation that aligns with their individuality and personal style.

Many clients are infatuated with how perfectly a custom piece suits its original wearer, often wanting the same for themselves. This is a testament to how well the piece was designed for that individual. My goal is to push the message of individuality through my work. It's okay if something feels familiar or looks simple; what matters is that what you wear or own truly reflects who you are. Much of the Western world is influenced by trends, but there is immense beauty in being unique. There is only one you, and that is beautiful. With this in mind, my vision for my life and work is to align my professional endeavors with the way I want to live, not the other way around. Individualism sets us free, and through my jewelry, I strive to celebrate and promote this freedom.

What are some key business lessons you've learned along the way, especially in navigating the competitive and dynamic world of fashion?

Create your own goals and do what feels right for you to get to them. It’s okay to ask for advice but keep in mind that you know yourself better than anyone else.

When you need to get into a focused, productive mindset, do you have a go-to playlist or type of music that helps fuel your creativity and drive?

When I need to focus, I love listening to Khruangbin and Raveena Aurora. Khruangbin's groovy, hypnotic instrumentals create a serene atmosphere, while Raveena's soulful R&B and dreamy pop offer soothing vocals and calming soundscapes. Their music helps me stay calm and creative.

Are there any books or authors that have left a lasting impact during your journey so far?

I don’t get to read as often as I would like but I read a lot about spiritual enlightenment and holistic. I believe everything is interconnected and that there is truth to different point of views. The most recent book I read and loved was Celestine Prophecy.

Do you have any favourite spots in LA that you consider a sanctuary to retreat to?

I love the Arboretum and visiting different nurseries. My favorite places are always where I can enjoy nature and immerse myself in its beauty.

Where is your favourite place to escape to for relaxation and to unwind?

My favourite place to escape for relaxation and to unwind is the ocean. Specifically, I love tropical landscapes with warm water. The Caribbean is my favourite destination for therapy.
